Indonesia completed a remarkable comeback to defeat host nation India 3-2 in a thrilling semifinal of the AVC Men’s Cup 2026 on June 27 at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, India. After dropping the opening set convincingly, Indonesia showed incredible resilience, fighting back to win an intense five-set battle and secure a place in the championship match. Indonesia responded immediately in the second set. Both teams traded points throughout a closely contested battle, but Indonesia remained composed in the closing rallies to edge India 26-24, leveling the match at one set apiece and completely shifting the momentum.
The third set saw Indonesia continue its strong play. Improved blocking and more consistent attacking allowed the visitors to control much of the set, limiting India’s offense and claiming it 25-20 to move within one set of the final.
Facing elimination, India answered with an impressive performance in the fourth set. The hosts increased the pressure from the service line, improved their defense, and capitalized on several Indonesian errors to win 25-19, forcing a dramatic deciding fifth set.
The final set delivered everything volleyball fans could hope for. Neither team managed to establish a comfortable lead as both sides exchanged spectacular rallies and crucial defensive plays. In the closing moments, Indonesia kept its composure, converting the decisive points to secure a 15-13 victory and complete an unforgettable 3-2 comeback.
One of the biggest reasons behind Indonesia’s victory was its ability to recover after a difficult opening set. The team’s serving became far more effective from the second set onward, disrupting India’s reception and creating more scoring opportunities. Indonesia’s blocking also improved significantly, slowing down India’s attackers, while the players remained calm during the pressure moments of both the second and fifth sets.
Although eliminated, India received widespread praise for its outstanding performance throughout the tournament. The hosts pushed one of Asia’s strongest teams to the limit, displaying excellent attacking volleyball and tremendous fighting spirit in front of their passionate supporters. Falling just two points short of the final demonstrated India’s growing strength on the continental stage.
For Indonesia, the victory continued an outstanding tournament run. After suffering a group-stage defeat to South Korea, the team rebounded with victories over Qatar, survived a thrilling five-set quarterfinal against Thailand, and then eliminated host India in another dramatic five-set battle before advancing to face South Korea in the championship match.
The importance of this semifinal became even greater one day later when Indonesia defeated South Korea in straight sets to capture its first-ever AVC Men’s Cup championship. The historic title also boosted Indonesia’s position in the FIVB World Rankings and marked one of the greatest achievements in the country’s volleyball history.
